Leaving Our COVID Caves: When You’re Anxious About Returning to Normal

Rebuild, reopen, restart? Maybe. Or you might only be ready to wade into the shallow end of the public pool.

COVID forced us into full retreat. Who could’ve known what the year would bring? Who could’ve known we’d get so used to “zooming”, locking down, and slowing our social lives way, way down?

Yet, as the weather warms, we can feel “normalcy” starting to blow in the air. Talk of vaccinations and plans for vacations are ramping up. Invitations to in-person graduation ceremonies and backyard gatherings are on the rise.

Life is shifting and you’re just not sure how to feel.

Don’t worry. You are not alone. For many, the anxiety of isolation has morphed into worries that returning to old routines will simply be too much too soon.

Pay Attention to Your Internal Self

It’s okay to recognize that you want to live differently than you used to. The pandemic may have changed you. There is no shame in that. You don’t have to “bounce back” if it doesn’t serve you. Your lockdown routines and realizations don’t have to be cast aside. You get to decide.

Pay attention to what serves you and continue to embrace those things. Pay attention to your wants and needs. If you’ve discovered that you work well from home, talk to your boss about it. If you’ve become a gardening guru or appreciate some time to meditate and journal, schedule time for those pleasures.

If you find that your mind and body crave comfort and safety as the world surges back into in-person interaction, it’s okay to take a step back. Contemplate what you really want. Exercise your right to choose what comes next.
